The vision for Cambodia is to see as many people born again as possible. This is indeed, the goal of Christian missions worldwide. But goals are accomplished differently depending on the culture. We need creative ways to reach the lost for Christ. This is what we pray for. This is what we need God to help us with. Cambodia is a difficult nation to reach, because of a generational Buddhist mindset. Our goal is to introduce people to Christ, not Western Christianity. Jesus trancends all cultures, and He is far from the "white man's God" or "America's religion", as what seems to be implied by most Cambodians.
The idea for New Hope English School was concieved with the goal of teaching local Cambodians English, and at the same time, exposing them to the truths of the Gospel. It is a creative way to educate Phnom Penh youth, while not neglecting the importance of providing Spirtual care as well. We believe knowledge is, in and of itself, not enough. Each member of this ministry has seen for themselves, the difference that a relationship with Jesus has made in their lives. We desire to live lives that argue the truth of the Gospel more than we could with words.
New Hope English School is part of Cambodian Mission Outreach, along with New Hope School, and New Life in Christ Church. We use Interchange for the English ciriculum, and the classes range from Level 1 (Introduction) to Level 12 (nearly fluent). Class is in session from 4:00-6:30pm daily. Over 200 students enrolled in New Hope English School, but more are added everyday. English classes are in high demand here in Cambodia, and so are English teachers!!
Education is not easy for most Cambodians to get. New Hope English School offers the chance to learn English at a cost of $5/month. If students are not able or willing to pay for learning, a scholarship option exists for them. To qualify for the scholarship, students must attend 5 church activities per month. Activities include saturday evening youth meetings, and sunday morning worship services. By attending the required 5 activities, students learn English for free, and they get to hear the life-changing Gospel many times each month! There are well over 100 youth in attendance for the saturday evening meetings, and many do not profess a relationship with the Savior, Jesus Christ. Many, though, have realized that without Jesus in their lives, they are doomed to a life of unsatisfaction which will continue spiraling downwards towards hell.
The harvest here in Cambodia is ripe, we are praying that the Lord of the harvest will send us more workers. Could you be one of those workers whom God is answering our prayer through? What an amazing ministry opportunity exists in New Hope English School.
We need foreign english teachers to help fulfil this vision. Foreign English speakers are important because the students desperately need help with their pronunciation. Extensive teaching background is not necessary. Missionaries have come with no prior english teaching experience, and have found the Interchange courses easy and fun to teach. The real challenge is to come to Cambodia. After that, the Lord will bless your efforts, and your service. One of the better ministry quotes states: God does not call those who are equipped; He quips those who are called. So pray about coming to Cambodia to share some of the gifts that God has placed in you.
